Oliver's Story

Oliver was a lively, fun loving child who was into all sorts - trains, gadgets, teasing his brother, or anything rude!  After weeks of Oliver being "not quite right" including ear infections, headaches, night sweats and confusing dreams, he was admitted to the Conquest Hospital for tests where an MRI scan revealed a large tumour in his skull.

He was referred to The Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton, where he received intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy starting on his 8th Birthday.  He described it as his best birthday ever! This is an example of the courage and positivity he had throughout his treatment.

It wasn't an easy journey as Oliver endured two infections which resulted in him being admitted to intensive care. He was then put on a ventilator due to a collapsed lung, and spent numerous weeks in hospital receiving IV antibiotics, blood and platelet transfusions.

His treatment finished in March 2007 and he got to celebrate his 9th birthday on a family holiday in Malta, where he fulfilled his dream and swam with dolphins.

Sadly, by the end of June, his tumour had returned and no further curative treatment was available.

He received oral chemotherapy to slow the tumour down and he managed to enjoy the summer to the full, enjoying breaks in France and Centre Parcs.

Richard and Sarah were very proud of Oliver for his bravery and attitude to life, and also of Oliver’s brother Joseph, who coped amazingly throughout.  Oliver also managed to enjoy time with his newborn sister who arrived in July 2007. Oliver named her Martha from his favourite programme Dr Who!
Oliver spent the last few weeks of his life at home with his family, enjoying many of his favourite hobbies including Harry Potter stories being read to him and looking at his "Mighty Beans".  He managed to keep his amazing sense of humour throughout and passed away peacefully at 4.25 am on Friday 9th November.
